Oh boy, do I have a recipe for you all today. It's for a dish called Daging Masak Merah, which roughly translates to "Red Cooked Meat" in some language that I definitely didn't just Google. Okay, so this first image is technically not of Daging Masak Merah, but it's still a Malaysian dish called Ayam Kicap and it looks damn good. Plus, the recipe for Daging Masak Merah is pretty similar, so just pretend this is what it looks like when you're finished cooking.
Ingredients:
- 1 pound beef or chicken, cut into bite-size pieces
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 inch ginger, grated
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons sweet soy sauce (kecap manis)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Heat some oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add the onions and sauté until they're translucent and fragrant, about 5 minutes.
- Add in the garlic and ginger and cook for another minute or two.
- Add in the turmeric and chili powder and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add the meat and fry until browned on all sides.
- Mix in the tomato paste, soy sauce, and sweet soy sauce. Stir everything together until the meat is coated.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and simmer for 10-15 minutes until the meat is fully cooked and tender. If the sauce is too thick, add a little water to thin it out.
- Season with salt and pepper to your taste.
- Serve with rice and enjoy!
